Highlights and Shadows
Before:
After:
This photo is of my brother Colby grabbing hay from the bailer and pulling it onto the trailer when on the farm. Using highlights, I adjusted the amount, tone, and radius to define the clouds in the image. I used shadows to adjusted the tone and radius to make the picture become clearer and have the elements such as my brother Colby and the hay bailer stand out a little bit more. By adjusting just the highlights and shadows, I was able to make the red in the machine stand out more as well as define the clouds in the sky.
Adjustments Panel
Before:
After:
This photo is of my Dad hooking up a hay bailer to a wagon on a farm in Canada. To create a retro, old looking feel on the image, I used the adjustments panel to adjust the brightness, contrast, vibrant, colors and more. I first adjusted the brightness to make the image slightly brighter, then I lowered the contrast slightly. Using the color balance, I added yellow, red, cyan, and some magenta to the image and reduced the blacks in the photo. I also increased the offset and added some vibrance to make sure that the elements can still be distinguished when I adjusted the saturation. I made the biggest impact by reducing the saturation of the image which caused for the elements to fade into the picture while still being visible to add to the old looking effect.
Clipping Mask
Before:
After:
I took this panorama photo of my family while they were making hay on the farm we stay at every summer. I decided to create a clipping mask with the word Canada and this photo because making hay is a major thing we do when we go there. To create it, I first inserted the picture I wanted and in another layer, I typed “Canada” using the text tool. I styled the word how I wanted it, by making the letters very wide so more of the image can be seen. When done editing it, I rasterized the word. I then created the clipping mask by making sure that the picture layer was on top of the word layer, and selecting clipping mask. I think this is a cool way to express a picture using a word and is different from some of the other photoshopped images I have.
Adjustments Layer
Before:
After:
I took this photo of my mom when we were in the field on the farm. I used adjustment layers to make my mom stand out from the background of the image. I began by selecting my mom and then making her a different layer, separating her from the background. Using adjustment layers, I made the background black and white by removing all the saturation. Because my mom and the background are in different layers, my mom remained the same color, causing for her to be the only thing in the image to have color.
Blur Tool
Before:
After:
I took this photo when my brother Colby was about to grab hay from the bailer and pull it onto the trailer. Because I wanted Colby to be the main subject of the photo, I decided to blur out everything else besides him by using the blur tools. I began by selecting Colby, then inversely selecting so everything but Colby would be edited. Using the blur tool, I then began to blur the background by moving around the circle (mouse) to the images I wanted to blur. I think this came out really cool and the blurred background is really beneficial to the overall look of the image.
Blending Modes
Before:
After:
I took this photo of my Dad and my brother Colby after a long day of work on the farm. Because there is so much sky in this image, I decided that it would be cool if I added a Canadian flag to make the sky less boring by using the blending mode. I did this by first inserting both of the images and making sure they were the same size for easier blending. With the photos on top of one another, I clicked multiply while on the top layer. I then adjusted the opacity of the flag because when it was 100% it was way to distracting and didn’t look good with the image below. I then slightly adjusted the brightness of the image of my dad and Colby because it was a little too dark. I really like how this came out because it added a completely different and much more interesting look to the photo.
Patch Tool
Before:
After:
This is a photo of my dad stacking hay on the trailer. As you can see in the photo, my dad has a piece of hay in his mouth. I used the patch tool to remove that piece of hay. I started by selecting the piece of hay and then dragging my mouse to a piece of sky from around the hay. By doing this, the piece of hay was flawlessly removed and you can even tell that it was there in the first place. This is definitely a tool that I plan to use in the future for it was very helpful and easy to use, yet it easily achieves a purposes of eliminating unwanted things in photos.
Clone Tool
Before:
After:
I took this photo of my mom while she was picking strawberries in the garden. My grandmother was out in the garden with her, and I just happened to take the picture as she was bending down to pick up a strawberry. She was distracting and it wasn't her best angle so I decided to remove her, I used the clone tool. I first started by selecting just her and then deleting her from the picture. Left with a white checkered space, I then used the clone tool to capture another area of the photo that would seem to fit in the best. I was able to re-created the plants and dirt around where my grandmother used to be to make it seem like she wasn’t even there at all. I think it is super cool how I was able to completely remove something from a photo and make it unnoticeable by simplifying using the clone tool, and I definitely plan on using this for future photos.
Selection Tools
Before:
After:
This photo is of me on the beach holding up the Canadian flag. I wanted to have a little fun with this image, so I decided to use the selection tools to make multiple “me’s”. I first started by selecting myself completely and then pressing command and C to copy just myself, not the entire image. I then pasted twice using command V so there are 2 more of me. I then adjusted the placement of each “person” and blended certain parts near my feet so they would fit in with the background. Overall I think this is a comical image that is a simple yet cool way to use the selection tools.
Animation
Before:
After:
These four photos were taken over the course of a long day of doing hay. The first 2 are of my brother loading hay into the barn. The 3rd images if of my dad thinking about how to stack the hay, and the 4th is a photo of the full trailer of hay. With these photos, I created an animation to display the images as a slide show. I fist started by embedding all my images into Photoshop, and then I opened the timeline to create the slideshow. For each image file, I hid the 3 other images that I didn’t want, allowing for just the image I wanted to be shown. I adjusted the time that each image shows for from 5 to 2 seconds, so the viewer would have enough time to look at the image without being bored. I made sure when exporting that I exported it as a gif so it would work on the web.
